More on Flaws and Beauty

It seems as though this subject for me just won’t go away. Everyday it seems of late it has reared up and added another layer of jam to this cake called Pretty vs. Beauty. Just this morning again a new spot I found added another poignant nut.

It was so well-timed, because just this morning I saw one of my nieces finding herself and learning how to go with her gut. Young girls and boys I think are far too wrapped up on this ideal of pretty, and this constant fight to find and be recognized for who we are inside, rather than how we look outside. I see my outside as a book cover, something that changes over time. Yet the content inside remains, just perhaps some new prologue or random dialogue to either the front or the end is added, taken away.

This subject actually puts me in mind of one of my favourite humans – Oscar Wilde. I LOVE him. Everything he’s written, all his antics, his lovely flaws and his Dandy style… his Largess of spirit.

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

or this one too…delicious

“God knows; I won’t be an Oxford don anyhow. I’ll be a poet, a writer, a dramatist. Somehow or other I’ll be famous, and if not famous, I’ll be notorious. Or perhaps I’ll lead the life of pleasure for a time and then—who knows?—rest and do nothing. What does Plato say is the highest end that man can attain here below? To sit down and contemplate the good. Perhaps that will be the end of me too.”

I ponder this so often it seems of late. Contemplating good, the nature of bad, ugly, indifference. Throw in some divinity and the nature of God, and what role spirit plays, or should play in our everyday lives. If we are speaking of beauty, I often think of the Native belief in terms of Beauty. Beauty for them being synonymous with their concept of the higher power. Often represented in a feminine aspect, but not merely feminine, but instead embodies both masculine and feminine and thus becomes neither.

So that is the nature of Beauty I am referring to. Beauty as something soothing and rich, passionate and with a strength born of renewal and birth, good and bad. Within the very worst of us, there exists some sliver of beauty. It is the thing we hunt for our entire lives, this elusive sense, this love, this shining light of truth and balance. Quantum Physics would place God at the centre, in the in-between, in the black holes, and places where our linear minds perceive nothing. It is worth considering that only with a gigantic Hadron Collider may we even glimpse this particle of God.

Yet that is lofty stuff to be hurtling at a young person. Yet, I am speaking of how insignificant we are to one degree, yet how completely SIGNIFICANT we are…at the same time. It is so not important how pretty we are, or what mode of presentation we choose, instead it is far more significant what goodness and reality we bring to this place we occupy. We hunt for this thing called beauty, I believe, just as strongly should we learn how to be more forthright with our beauty in how we treat others, how we can spend more of our time lifting each other up, rather than putting each other down.

Your Beauty is often part and parcel of your flaws. The one can not exist without the other. There must be a positive, for negative to exist. There must be bad for goodness to be. We must recognize our ugliness in order to be more present within our instinctive Beauty.

Hat & ScarfI find for me I am a decorative sort. I’m happiest when I put some effort in to how I present myself. When I don’t, well, I don’t and I don’t care what anyone else has to say about it. I do however, usually like to look good, but I have little tricks I’ve discovered on how to look good with really little effort – that is – A cool hat and a fancy scarf. I swear you can be wearing the rattiest cloths you own, but if you’re wear a cool hat and a fancy scarf….tada…..you look put together. AND, since spring this year has been reluctant, the combination adds a wonderful protection from the wind. They don’t even have to match anymore….THAT I think is dynamite. Love that about fashion, the trend now is there really is no trend…BE YOU.

So that’s what the subject of the week is…least back here in Dodge it is.

That is the truth of it. I think that the more beauty you try to share of yourself, the more Beauty you receive in turn. Sculpt down inside and dig out that inner piece to share with the world. The important thing is NOT how others see you, but how you view yourself. How do you view yourself?

  1. Beautiful words. It reminds me of a verse from Psalm 8:3-5 –

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals[a] that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.

When we recognize our beauty through the eyes of our Creator, we can deal with whatever ugliness life has in store for us.

    Thanks for the post.
